Lowther Estate Trails

Explore Over 30km of stunning Cycle Trails with Arragons Cycle Hire

Lowther Estate has developed a wide range of cycle paths to allow free access to this beautiful estate & ancient woodlands.  The routes are well signposted and graded to suit every rider. Our bikes have been chosen to suit the terrain of the 30km of dedicated trail which ranges from open fell side to quiet lanes & tracks.

Purchasing tickets to the Castle is not necessary when hiring bikes to enjoy the cycle trails.  However, we recommend combining your cycle experience with a ticket to explore the stunning Castle Grounds which is also home to a super adventure playground The Lost Castle.  You can enjoy 10% discount with your hire voucher.

The Askham Fell Loop

The Askham Fell Loop starts and ends at Lowther Castle. It takes you through the Lower North Park, and up on to Askham Fell via Askham Village. Venture across the fell top with fantastic views of Lake Ullswater and drop back down via Whale returning to the Castle.

Moderate to Challenging mainly due to the climbing involved. The top of the Askham Fell Loop is relatively easy going with some slightly rockier areas to be aware of.

The Lowther Church Loop

The Lowther Church Loop starts and ends at Lowther Castle. This route takes you into the North Park, where you will come across Low Gardens Bridge. You will then take the riverside path along towards Askham Bridge and into the woods. Follow the path to the next signpost and turn left, returning you to Lowther Castle.

The Lowther Church Loop is relatively easy going, a couple of hills to negotiate, but nothing challenging. Majority of terrain is private concrete roads or gravel tracks meaning it is perfect for families.

The Lowther River Loop

The Lowther River Loop starts and ends at Lowther Castle. This route takes you into the North Park, where you will come across Low Gardens Bridge. You will then take the riverside path along towards Askham Bridge. Cross the bridge and up the hill in to Askham Village. Turn Left at the cross roads and follow the road, keeping left at the next fork in the road, signed to Whale. Cross the road bridge and take a left off the road. follow the gravel track back up the the hill returning to Lowther Castle.

This trail uses a lot of the Lowther Church Loop for the first half, which is very family friendly. If you are confident with children riding on roads, this trail is family friendly too.

Lowther to Naddle Farm & back

This is a lovely new addition to our existing network of trails accessible from Lowther Castle.  The route starts via our River Loop but continues left at the bridge and over to Bampton Grange.  Heading through Bampton,  you will cycle very quiet roads over to iconic Haweswater where you can enjoy stunning Lakeland scenes from the resevoir bottom.

Before you head back to Lowther, you can rest at RSPB Nature Reserve at Naddle Farm.  Advance booking is necessary for some of the highlights which include Badger Watching, Forest Bathing & Breakfast with Squirrels.  Don't worry though, if you arrive without notice you can still explore the ancient woodland and sight some wonderful wildlife, from elusive red squirrels playing in the trees to mountain ringlet butterflies who love the alpine wildflowers and of course, a plethera of birdlife.

The return to Lowther Castle picks up the Fell Loop taking in quiet country lanes and dedicated cycle trails.
